allchornr: I couldn’t agree more! I’ve explained this to the client over and over again … but unfortunately they knew exactly what they wanted and wouldn’t budge.

Personally, I think that hiring a designer for their expertise and then ignoring their advice is much like buying a Rottweiler and then sitting at the bottom of your garden barking

Well written. Articles like this are a great resources for explaining this sort of thing to a client.

One comment about the client’s CI though is that the word AFRICA in yellow is in bad contrast on the blue.

mielou: *nods* this was the client’s favourite tactic – if I didn’t do EXACTLY as he said (no matter how insane or stupid) it was bad service, and I was constantly reminded that “he is the client”.
Your situation’s a little different – this is a relationship with history; and hence worth at least TRYING to save. Can you not sit down and have a meeting with them about this?

My design firm has been experiencing similar with a client we’ve had for years. They started out great. 2 years without a hiccup. Now, from what I can only imagine is caused by stress, they have turned into insulting, demanding and rude clients, even telling us to change our processes that have been in place since day 1 for them and if we don’t, that’s bad customer service.

The last two weeks, I’ve had next to no sleep, a tight chest and a constant sick feeling in my stomach. Everytime the phone rings my stomach turns over. This week is feeling a little bit better, but we should never have been treated that way by a client we’ve bent over backwards for.

Wow Meryl, what an awesome blog. I’m sure everybody can learn something from your bad experience with a nightmare of a client. I know how much effort and time you put into your work to ensure that it is the best you can deliver… and you know what? Your work is always something out of this world! Keep it up, you are doing a phenomenal job and your clients’ statements prove that.

Hahaha – seems like many of us are experiencing this right now – I also just fired a whole bunch of my clients. Well done for taking that step.
